It appearance was due to the requirements of the WW2, at a time when the US Army has contracted with three car manufacturers in order to create a durable and reliable military vehicle. Among automakers had one small company in Pennsylvania by the name American Bantam, who came up with a surprisingly simple and reliable design.
The car, called Bantam BRC, was surprisingly well-built, except for a small "glitch" that the army was perceived by officials as a major drawback: Bantam engine did not meet Army requirements.
The car was rejected, although it was made better than competitors' models. It was believed that Wyllis-Overland, a company comparable in size to by Bantam, which entered the race for the contract, the US Army had access to drawings and technical data of the last. After the victory in the race for the contract, Wyllis went on to design the plant in Toledo (Ohio) that later became the Jeep.
Although the company has already been appointed as the winner, the US Army is concerned for the Willys because of their inability to move the production to another plant, if required, and because of the relatively small size of the company, which made it vulnerable to espionage and sabotage actions. Thus, the Army requested the Ford Motor Company to produce for them Jeeps.
That the term "jeep" came at that moment. Ford gave his initials vehicles GPW, which are still considered to be cars "general purpose". However, Jeeps have been built for a specific purpose, and the name of this theory has been replaced in favor of another, according to which G is a government vehicle, P was an indicator of the wheelbase, while W is the design Wyllis.
Bartam was forgotten, andFord-Wyllis partnership has been the most productive - together they have produced more than 600,000 units during the war, the average value was slightly above $ 300 per unit.Jeep name has caused the origin of the brand, which is constantly changed owners.
The first civilianJeep CJ or was produced in 1941 byWyllis, then the owners began to change.Wyllis was transferred toKaiser in 1953, becoming in the process ofKaiser-Jeep. By 1970, the company was losing money, and she had no choice but to sell its activitiesAmerican Motors in 1973.
Development ofJeep vehicles has been renewed with the financial support ofRenault, who were also interested inJeep performance.
In 1987, in New YorkAMC replaced theCJ insanely popular modelWrangler, which had a new design. AfterRenault withdrew because of changes in the car market,American Motors was bought byChrysler, which later merged withDaimler Benz to createDiamler Chrysler group, which is now responsible for the production and marketing ofJeep vehicles.
Jeeps are widely known for their durability and reliability in the most rugged terrain and are renowned for their suspension, which provides increased ground clearance for the wheels larger.
Older carsJeep commonly served in Vietnam, where their name has been translated as "quite necessary parts." Off-road ability of the vehicle continues to be a major advantage in the sale, and the brand gathered an army of loyal fans.
